A 29-year-old Mexican national has been sent to prison for 15 years after being found guilty of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine in Idaho. Efren Alexander Aviles-Pacheco, of Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, had been living in Ontario, Oregon. On November 22, 2022, Aviles-Pacheco was arrested in a motel room in Nampa, Idaho.
According to court records, at the time of his arrest, Aviles-Pacheco was found in possession of 122 grams of methamphetamine, 365 grams of fentanyl, 29 grams of cocaine, $3,415 in cash, and a 9mm handgun. He pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine on August 5, 2024.
This is Aviles-Pacheco’s second conviction for the same charge in the District of Idaho. In 2019, he was previously convicted of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and was sentenced to 46 months in prison. He was deported to Mexico after serving his sentence, but shortly after, he returned to the United States and resumed his drug trafficking activities.
Senior U.S. District Court Judge B. Lynn Winmill found that Aviles-Pacheco was likely responsible for the death of at least two individuals who overdosed on drugs provided by him. The judge stated that ‘if ever there was a case that screamed out for a long prison sentence, this is the case.’
Aviles-Pacheco is the latest member of an Ontario, Oregon family to be convicted of drug trafficking crimes. His father, Efren Ramon Aviles-Lopez, was sentenced in the District of Idaho in 2015 to serve 20 years for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. His mother, Alma Loreno Pacheco-Ortiz, was sentenced in 2024 in the District of Oregon to time served and five years of supervised release after she was arrested transporting 40 pounds of methamphetamine, a kilo of heroin, and a firearm.
Aviles-Pacheco was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison and will serve 10 years of supervised release after his release. Judge Winmill advised Aviles-Pacheco that he will most certainly be deported to Mexico after serving his sentence.
U.S. Attorney Josh Hurwit commended the work of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Nampa Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration for their roles in dismantling Aviles-Pacheco’s drug trafficking operation.
