A brazen scam artist has left a trail of financial ruin in his wake, with thousands of unsuspecting victims falling prey to his elaborate scheme. Tony Conroy, a self-proclaimed phrenologist, has been accused of wholesale fraud by the U.S. authorities.
Conroy, who poses as a Hindu mystic born in London, traveled to Canon City, Colorado, where he spent nearly a week before heading to Salida, thinking the town’s residents were too wise for his operations. However, it was in Salida that he was finally apprehended by Post Office Inspector J.A. Niles of Ne1 cedah, Wisconsin.
Niles revealed that Conroy has been operating for 11 years, leaving a path of destruction in his wake. The post office authorities had been on his trail since April of the previous year, but Conroy’s cunning and deceitful nature had allowed him to evade capture.
Conroy’s modus operandi involved claiming to possess special powers and declaring himself 81 years old. However, records from the grand jury in Michigan showed that he was indicted five years ago on an unmentionable charge and listed his age as 56 years, raising suspicions about his true identity and intentions.
The scale of Conroy’s crimes is staggering, with 5,000 victims fleeced and $40,000 of their money taken. His activities have been widespread, with him visiting nearly every state in the Union, always finding ready victims awaiting him.
Conroy’s arrest marks a significant victory for law enforcement, but it remains to be seen how many of his victims will be able to recover their losses. One thing is certain, however: Tony Conroy’s days as a free man are numbered, and justice will soon be served.
