Leland James Vijarro, Assaulting Federal Officers, Washington 2024

Yakima, Washington – A brazen act of aggression against law enforcement has culminated in a severe punishment for Leland James Vijarro.

Vijarro, 26, from Toppenish, was sentenced to 198 months in federal prison following his guilty plea on charges of assaulting federal officers and firearms violations. United States District Judge Mary K. Dimke also imposed a five-year supervised release term.

The court documents detailed the events of February 8, 2024, when Vijarro broke into his brother’s home, stole thirteen firearms and a suppressor. His criminal spree took another turn on February 10 when law enforcement officers responded to gunshots from his vehicle. During a pursuit, Vijarro fled and barricaded himself, eventually firing six shots at police officers from a stolen handgun.

Assistant United States Attorney Bree Black Horse argued for the lengthy sentence, highlighting Vijarro’s extensive criminal history of assaults, arson, thefts, and domestic violence. The prosecution emphasized that his actions posed a significant threat to public safety on the Yakama Nation Indian Reservation.

In imposing the sentence, Judge Dimke cited Vijarro’s escalating pattern of violent behavior, noting it was crucial to protect the community. U.S. Attorney Pete Serrano praised law enforcement for their bravery and dedication in apprehending such a dangerous individual.

“Mr. Vijarro’s actions were violent and reckless,” said Serrano. “We are grateful for the men and women of our office who hold violent offenders accountable.” Special Agent W. Mike Herrington of the FBI Seattle office echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the commitment to combating violence through initiatives like Operation Summer Heat.

Sheriff Robert Udell expressed relief that no law enforcement officers were injured during the encounter with Vijarro. The successful prosecution was attributed to AUSA Black Horse and her team’s efforts in ensuring justice for the community.
