Yakima, Washington – United States Attorney Pete Serrano announced the sentencing of Leland James Vijarro, 26, to more than 16 years in federal prison following his guilty plea to assaulting federal officers and firearm charges.
On February 8, 2024, Vijarro broke into his brother’s home in Toppenish and stole thirteen firearms and a suppresser. The next day, he fired six shots from a stolen handgun at law enforcement officers during a stand-off, resulting in damaged police vehicles. He ultimately surrendered after barricading himself inside another residence.
Assistant United States Attorney Bree Black Horse highlighted Vijarro’s extensive criminal history, noting that the defendant “possessed over a decade of convictions and arrests characterized by assaults, arson, firearm offenses, thefts, and domestic violence crimes.” The AUSA argued for a sentence of 198 months, citing the defendant’s threat to public safety.
U.S. Attorney Serrano expressed gratitude for the law enforcement officers who risked their lives during the incident. “Mr. Vijarro’s actions were violent and reckless,” Serrano said. “I’m grateful to AUSA Black Horse’s great work on this case.”
FBI Special Agent in Charge W. Mike Herrington emphasized the commitment to combating violent criminals, noting that the shooting was an example of the nationwide Operation Summer Heat initiative. Sheriff Robert Udell commended the successful prosecution and expressed gratitude for the law enforcement efforts that kept officers safe during the encounter.
