LAREDO, Texas – Forty-one kilograms of methamphetamine, stuffed inside automotive torque converters, weren’t enough to fool the feds. Santos Joel Garza, 28, of Houston, learned that lesson the hard way, receiving a 240-month federal prison sentence this week for his role in a brazen attempt to traffic the deadly drug into the United States. U.S. District Judge Keith P. Ellison didn’t mince words, handing down the maximum and adding five years of supervised release to Garza’s lengthy stay behind bars.
The bust unfolded January 13-14, 2023, when Garza and accomplice Britain Jean Sada, 36, also of Houston, drove to Laredo. Sada crossed the border into Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, while Garza remained stateside, providing Sada with his cell phone for use during the operation. Sada returned claiming a brief family visit, but the loaded torque converters in the truck bed drew suspicion during secondary inspection. Inside, authorities discovered a staggering 41.35 kilograms – nearly 90 pounds – of pure methamphetamine.
“Methamphetamine destroys lives and poisons American communities,” declared U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei. “The staggering amount of methamphetamine seized here—roughly 90 pounds—shows that Mr. Garza was trusted by his confederates, likely indicating a long history of drug smuggling and cooperation. With today’s sentence, Mr. Garza will now have two decades to think about the harm that his trafficking caused.” The investigation quickly revealed a pattern of communication between Garza and Sada regarding the trip and the illicit cargo, confirming Garza’s knowledge and active participation.
Garza’s past is as checkered as the border he tried to cross. Court records reveal a lengthy and violent criminal history, including multiple robbery convictions. Adding insult to injury, Garza even assaulted detention guards while awaiting trial, demonstrating a complete disregard for the law and those who enforce it. Judge Ellison clearly considered this when delivering the harsh sentence.
Sada, 36, has already pleaded guilty to her role in the conspiracy and is scheduled to be sentenced on July 24th. This case was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) under the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) program. OCDETF focuses on dismantling the most dangerous criminal organizations threatening the nation, utilizing a multi-agency, intelligence-driven approach.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandon Scott Bowling prosecuted the case, securing the conviction and lengthy sentence. Garza remains in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.
