In a shocking turn of events, Tramaine Liptrot, a 43-year-old police officer with the City of Miami Police Department, has pleaded guilty to wire fraud in connection with fraudulent applications for two Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans totaling over $200,000.
According to the facts admitted at the change of plea hearing, Liptrot, who has been relieved of duty, fraudulently obtained two PPP loans in the name of his company, Liptrots Tax Services L.L.C. (Liptrots Tax). The loans were worth approximately $91,750 and $108,422 respectively.
Liptrot, who is scheduled to be sentenced on August 6, 2025, at 10:30 a.m., faces a possible maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison. The investigation into the case was conducted by the FBI Miami’s Area Corruption Task Force, which includes task force officers from the City of Miami Police Department’s Internal Affairs Section, and the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Inspector General (SBA-OIG).
U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’Byrne for the Southern District of Florida, acting Special Agent in Charge Brett D. Skiles of FBI Miami, and Special Agent in Charge Amaleka McCall-Brathwaite of the SBA-OIG, Eastern Region, announced the guilty plea.
The COVID-19 pandemic led to the creation of the Paycheck Protection Program, which was designed to provide emergency financial assistance to small businesses. However, the program was marred by widespread fraud, with many individuals and businesses taking advantage of the system to secure loans they were not entitled to.
Tramaine Liptrot’s guilty plea is a stark reminder of the need for accountability and transparency in the distribution of government funds. His actions not only cheated the system but also undermined the efforts of honest business owners who were struggling to stay afloat during the pandemic.
