Travis Greil, Secretly Recording Minors, Wisconsin 2021

Wausau, WI – In a shocking case of betrayal, a former high school teacher has been sentenced to 8 1/2 years in prison for secretly recording his students.

On February 12, 2020, a parent reported that their daughter, a student of Travis Greil’s, had suspected that the teacher had taken a picture up her skirt. The daughter’s concerns were not unfounded, as an investigation revealed that Greil had been secretly producing videos of his students engaging in sexually explicit conduct.

The videos, which total 132, were found on Greil’s personal iPad and date back to September 2015. The victims, 81 underage females and 1 adult, were all filmed at Greil’s desk at D.C. Everest Senior High School. The disturbing content includes ‘up-blouse’ images that focus on the victim’s breasts and ‘up-skirt’ images that focus on the victim’s pubic area or buttocks.

At the sentencing hearing, numerous victims shared their emotional stories, expressing feelings of anger and betrayal. Judge William Conley called Greil’s conduct ‘predatory’ and noted that he used his position of trust to manipulate his students.

The investigation into Greil’s crimes was a collaborative effort involving the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation – Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the Wisconsin Office of Crime Victim Services, the Everest Metro and Wausau Police Departments, the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office, the Marathon County District Attorney’s Office, and the Wausau Police Department – Victim Resource Unit, with the assistance of the D.C. Everest Area School District.

The prosecution of the case was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Elizabeth Altman and Chadwick Elgersma and State of Wisconsin Assistant Attorney General David Maas. Greil pleaded guilty to the charge on May 13, 2021, and has now been sentenced to 8 1/2 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
