
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A devastating case of child abuse has shaken the community of Mescalero, New Mexico. James Darius Caje, a 27-year-old man and enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, has pleaded guilty to sexual abuse of a minor in federal court.
Caje, who will remain in custody pending sentencing, allegedly entered the bedroom of a 14-year-old girl on the night of Feb. 24 or early morning Feb. 25, 2020 and sexually assaulted her. The following day, the victim reported the assault to a school counsellor, who then reported it to law enforcement.
The assault occurred on the Mescalero Apache Reservation, leaving a trail of trauma and pain for the young victim. The FBI investigated this case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron O. Jordan is prosecuting the case.
According to the plea agreement, Caje faces 10 years in prison. This sentence serves as a stark reminder of the severity of child abuse and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
