ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A devastating case of child abuse has shaken the community of Mescalero, New Mexico. James Darius Caje, a 27-year-old man and enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, has pleaded guilty to sexual abuse of a minor in federal court.

Caje, who will remain in custody pending sentencing, allegedly entered the bedroom of a 14-year-old girl on the night of Feb. 24 or early morning Feb. 25, 2020 and sexually assaulted her. The following day, the victim reported the assault to a school counsellor, who then reported it to law enforcement.

The assault occurred on the Mescalero Apache Reservation, leaving a trail of trauma and pain for the young victim. The FBI investigated this case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron O. Jordan is prosecuting the case.
