Travis Lee McKie, Child Pornography, Iowa 2021

DAVENPORT, Iowa – Travis Lee McKie, 41, of Aiken, South Carolina, will spend the next 27 years and 1 month in federal prison after being sentenced Wednesday for the production of child pornography. Chief Judge John A. Jarvey of the U.S. District Court handed down the 325-month sentence, followed by 10 years of supervised release. McKie was also ordered to pay $100 to the Crime Victims’ Fund.

The depravity didn’t stop at the initial crime. McKie was already incarcerated at the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, South Carolina when he managed to obtain a cellular phone. From behind bars, he targeted a minor victim in the Southern District of Iowa, relentlessly pressuring the child into sending sexually explicit images. Investigators describe his communications as laced with derogatory remarks, adding another layer of cruelty to the exploitation.

The case broke open when Facebook flagged suspicious content – a Cybertip reporting the upload of sexually explicit material involving minors. That tip sparked a federal investigation led by the U.S. Secret Service. Multiple search warrants were executed, ultimately zeroing in on McKie as the perpetrator. A subsequent search of his Google account revealed a cache of disturbing images, proving he had produced the child pornography using content received from the victim.

McKie pleaded guilty to the offense on August 11, 2021, attempting to mitigate the damage. But Judge Jarvey clearly signaled that leniency was not an option. The lengthy sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the vulnerability of the victim. U.S. Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentencing, emphasizing the commitment to protecting children from sexual exploitation.

This prosecution was part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Childhood” initiative, launched in 2006. The program aims to coordinate federal, state, and local law enforcement efforts, alongside community outreach, to combat the sexual abuse of children. The Secret Service’s involvement underscores the growing role federal agencies play in investigating online crimes against minors.

Authorities urge anyone with information regarding child sexual abuse to contact the Iowa Sexual Abuse Hotline at 1-800-284-7821. This case serves as a grim reminder of the predators lurking online and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable children. McKie’s actions, even while imprisoned, demonstrate a chilling disregard for the law and the well-being of a minor.
