Fargo, North Dakota man Traye Mjelde, 29, has been sentenced to federal prison for escaping from a residential reentry center in Sioux Falls.

According to the United States Attorney Ron Parsons, Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange, U.S. District Court, sentenced Mjelde to one year in federal prison and ordered him to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The escape occurred in April 2025 when Mjelde walked away from the residential reentry center without authorization. He was found approximately one month later and arrested by law enforcement.

Mjelde was initially sentenced to 30 months in federal prison after being convicted of possessing a firearm after a felony conviction. He pleaded guilty on March 16, 2026, to the escape charge.

The case was investigated by the United States Marshals Service, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Hodges prosecuted the case.

Mjelde was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. The sentencing took place on May 18, 2026.
