Bismarck Man Nabbed for Bank Heist
A brazen daytime bank robbery in Bismarck, North Dakota left police scrambling to catch the culprit. On May 6, 2014, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Sean Michael Nichols, 38, of Bismarck, walked into the Dakota Community Bank, located at 1727 State St., and demanded money. No weapon was used during the heist. Witnesses reported seeing an individual fleeing the scene, leading police to track down Nichols, who was later found in possession of a portion of the stolen cash.
After a brief investigation, the Bismarck Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were able to link Nichols to the crime. The suspect was arrested on the same day and later charged with bank robbery.
Nichols ultimately pleaded guilty to the charge on September 23, 2014. On January 26, 2015, U.S. District Judge Daniel L. Hovland sentenced Nichols to 12 years and seven months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release. As part of the sentence, Nichols was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Crime Victim’s Fund and restitution to Dakota Community Bank.
Assistant U.S. Attorney David Hagler prosecuted the case, bringing closure to the victims and law enforcement agencies involved. The Bismarck community can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that justice has been served in this high-profile case.
