Harrisburg, PA – In a shocking turn of events, 24-year-old Tremayne James, a Harrisburg resident, has pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The disturbing incident occurred on December 7, 2017, when James’ 10-year-old nephew found a loaded .40 caliber Smith and Wesson firearm in their Harrisburg residence. The child accidentally fired the gun, striking his 6-year-old sister in the chest.
Fortunately, the young victim was treated at Hershey Medical Center and survived the ordeal. However, the fact that a convicted felon was in possession of a firearm raises serious concerns about public safety. According to U.S. Attorney David J. Freed, “James’ possession of a firearm put innocent lives at risk, and his guilty plea is a step in the right direction towards holding him accountable for his actions.”
The investigation into the incident was led by the Harrisburg Police Bureau and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott R. Ford is prosecuting the case, which is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative. Launched in 2017, PSN aims to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer by bringing together law enforcement and community leaders.
The maximum penalty for James’ offense carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, a term of supervised release, and a fine. However, the actual sentence will depend on various factors, including James’ history and characteristics, as well as the nature and seriousness of the offense.
James’ case is a stark reminder of the dangers of gun violence and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions. As Attorney General Jeff Sessions stated, “The Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative is designed to target violent criminals and reduce crime in our communities. We will continue to work tirelessly to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.”
The outcome of James’ case will be determined by Judge Sylvia H. Rambo, who will consider the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. The community can only hope that justice will be served and that James will receive the punishment he deserves for his reckless actions.
