Trevor Smith Sentenced to 10 Years for Attempted Child Sexual Abuse, Seattle WA, 2023
A former member of the Washington State Patrol has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to Attempted Enticement of a Minor, announced U.S. Attorney Nick Brown.
Trevor Smith, 30, of Marysville, was arrested in February 2021 after communicating with a woman who he believed was offering to allow him to have sex with her 6 and 11-year-old children. In reality, the woman was an undercover police officer, and the children were fictitious.
At the time of his arrest, Smith had traveled to a hotel where he intended to meet the woman and engage in the illegal activity. During the encounter, he purchased condoms, further highlighting his intentions.
Smith’s case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the Seattle Police Department as part of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC). The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Laura Harmon, a Senior King County Deputy Prosecutor specially designated to prosecute child exploitation crimes in federal court.
At the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge John H. Chun imposed 15 years of supervised release to follow the 10-year prison term. Smith will be required to register as a sex offender after his release from prison.
Smith was originally charged in King County Superior Court, but the case was transferred to federal court in May 2021. He was released on bond until January 2023, when he entered his guilty plea and was taken into custody to begin serving his sentence.
The harsh sentence handed down to Smith highlights the severe consequences of engaging in child exploitation crimes. The community can take comfort in knowing that such perpetrators will face the full weight of the law.
