ALEXANDRIA, LA – Treymon Daykeem Reed, 29, of Alexandria, Louisiana, is headed to federal prison for 72 months – six years – after pleading guilty to being a convicted felon illegally possessing firearms. U.S. District Judge David C. Joseph handed down the sentence yesterday, adding three years of supervised release to Reed’s term.
The case against Reed unfolded across two separate traffic stops in the Alexandria area. The first, on September 15, 2020, saw an Alexandria Police officer pull Reed over. The smell of marijuana emanating from the vehicle led to a search, uncovering a substantial stash: a large bag of marijuana, 62 pre-rolled cigarettes, and a staggering 194 oxycodone pills. Tucked amongst the drugs, officers also found a Sig Sauer 9mm magazine loaded with two rounds.
Less than three months later, on February 1, 2021, Reed found himself facing another traffic stop, this time for blowing a stop sign. This encounter proved even more damning. As Reed exited the vehicle, an officer noticed a bulky object in his pants pocket. A search revealed two large bags of suspected marijuana. Further investigation uncovered a loaded Glock 9mm pistol cleverly concealed between the driver’s seat and the center console, alongside a hefty $13,000 in cash.
Reed’s criminal history made his possession of these firearms a clear violation of federal law. He had previously been convicted of second-degree battery in 2013 and, more seriously, assault by drive-by shooting in 2009. These prior convictions permanently barred him from owning or possessing any firearm or ammunition. Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) meticulously analyzed the recovered weapons, confirming their connection to Reed.
The ATF and the Alexandria Police Department collaborated on the investigation, building a solid case against Reed. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jamilla A. Bynog prosecuted the case, successfully securing the 72-month sentence. The streets of Alexandria are a little safer with this repeat offender off them.
This case serves as a stark reminder that possessing firearms while being a convicted felon carries severe consequences. The ATF continues to work tirelessly with local law enforcement to dismantle illegal gun trafficking and bring those who endanger our communities to justice. The full weight of federal law will continue to be brought down on those who choose to flout it.
