Tribe Sued for Domestic Violence, Gets $805,000 in Grants
KANSAS CITY, KAN – Sac and Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas and Nebraska is under scrutiny for domestic violence and other crimes, while receiving $805,563 in public safety grants from the U.S. government, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said today.
The tribe, headquartered in Reserve, Kan., will receive the funding from the Justice Department’s Office of Violence Against Women. The money is part of $113 million in grants the government announced this week to improve public safety, serve victims of crime, combat violence against women and support youth programs in American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
Our office is working with tribal governments to protect women in Indian Country from domestic violence, sexual assault and other crimes, McAllister said.
Nationwide, 133 tribal governments and designees received grants. The funding aims to reduce violence against women and girls in these communities.
The Sac and Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas and Nebraska has faced allegations of domestic violence and other crimes in the past. The recent grants are a step towards addressing these issues, but critics argue that more needs to be done to protect women in these communities.
