A Box Elder woman who admitted to shooting another woman in the face over a drug deal on the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation was sentenced to five years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich said today.
Tricia Friede Gardipee, 51, pleaded guilty in September 2022 to assault resulting in serious bodily injury. The crime occurred on August 13, 2021, in Box Elder, Montana, where Gardipee shot Jane Doe in the face with a .22-caliber rifle.
The confrontation began when Gardipee confronted Doe and some of her friends earlier that day in Havre. Doe picked up a brick and said she didn’t want any problems. The dispute was over a drug deal gone wrong, as Gardipee was trying to get her money back after another woman ripped her off by selling her anxiety medication instead of fentanyl.
Gardipee and her son, both armed, blocked Doe’s car in the driveway of a Box Elder residence. Gardipee then shot Doe in the face. Doe was treated for her injuries.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Amanda L. Myers prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the FBI and the Rocky Boy’s Police Department.
The case highlights the dangers of violence and crime on Indian reservations. The Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation is a federally recognized tribe in north-central Montana.
Gardipee will serve her five-year prison sentence followed by three years of supervised release. The case is a reminder that justice will be served for those who commit violent crimes, no matter where they occur.
