MISSOULA — Charles Gibson Bailey, 36, of West Yellowstone, MT, has been sentenced to three years in federal prison for illegal possession of ammunition. The sentence follows his conviction for possessing unregistered improvised bombs and a subsequent violation of supervised release.
In October 2022, Bailey pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of ammunition. His plight began in May 2020 when he was sentenced to 40 months for the bomb conviction. In February 2022, Bailey’s supervised release was revoked after two encounters with a West Yellowstone officer and subsequent imprisonment.
During his supervised release period, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) investigated Bailey further. They executed a search warrant on his residence and vehicle in April 2022, where they seized 14 .40-caliber bullets with obliterated headstamps.
The ATF, West Yellowstone Police Department, and Federal Protective Service investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Timothy J. Racicot and Ryan G. Weldon. The sentence is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence.
Launched in May 2021, PSN strengthens community trust, supports violence prevention organizations, sets enforcement priorities, and measures results to make neighborhoods safer. This case underscores the commitment to combating illegal arms possession and fostering a safer community.
