MISSOULA — Charles Gibson Bailey, 36, from West Yellowstone, MT, has been sentenced to three years in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release for illegal possession of ammunition. The sentence follows Bailey’s conviction for possessing unregistered improvised bombs and comes after a series of encounters with law enforcement.
In May 2020, Bailey was imprisoned for 40 months for the bomb conviction. His supervised release was revoked in February 2022 following interactions with a West Yellowstone Police officer. A subsequent search warrant executed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) uncovered 14 .40-caliber bullets from his vehicle, their headstamps obliterated.
U.S. District Judge Dana L. Christensen presided over the sentencing hearing. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Timothy J. Racicot and Ryan G. Weldon prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the ATF, West Yellowstone Police Department, and the Federal Protective Service.
This sentence comes as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across communities. The program focuses on fostering trust, supporting community-based organizations, strategic enforcement, and measuring outcomes to ensure neighborhood safety.
The case underscores the government’s commitment to PSN, launched in May 2021, which has seen a focus on these principles: building trust with communities, backing organizations preventing violence, setting enforcement priorities, and evaluating results.
