Jose Antonio Ornelas Jr., Meth Trafficking, Arizona 2023

TUCSON, AZ – Jose Antonio Ornelas, Jr., 33, is headed to federal prison for nearly a decade after a brazen attempt to evade law enforcement during a drug deal. Ornelas, Jr. was sentenced on July 10 by U.S. District Court Judge Rosemary Márquez to 98 months imprisonment, followed by four years of supervised release. He previously pleaded guilty to Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine.

The case unfolded on October 3, 2024, when Ornelas, Jr. met with an individual to finalize the purchase of methamphetamine for $2,250. When officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, Ornelas, Jr. floored it, launching into a reckless high-speed chase through Tucson streets. He blew through a red light and even dared to drive against the flow of traffic, putting countless lives at risk.

The pursuit ultimately ended at a nearby apartment complex, where officers apprehended Ornelas, Jr. A search revealed more than just the intended methamphetamine. Authorities also recovered fentanyl pills, a .45 caliber extended magazine, a detailed drug ledger documenting transactions, and a scale used for weighing narcotics. The sheer volume of evidence pointed to a significant operation.

This wasn’t a lone operator. This case is a component of a larger Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation, a coordinated effort designed to dismantle major criminal enterprises. OCDETF focuses on identifying and crippling the highest-level organizations that plague the United States with illicit drugs and other criminal activity, employing a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach. More information about the OCDETF Program can be found at https://www.justice.gov/OCDETF.

The investigation was spearheaded by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), with Assistant U.S. Attorney Ashley Culver, District of Arizona, Tucson, handling the prosecution. The DEA’s relentless pursuit and Culver’s sharp legal work were instrumental in securing the conviction and lengthy sentence for Ornelas, Jr.
