Lana Leshinsky, 41, of Tucson, Ariz., has been indicted on federal charges tied to the deadly spread of fentanyl, including one count of distribution of fentanyl resulting in death—a charge that carries a mandatory minimum of 20 years in prison and a maximum of life behind bars.
The grand jury indictment, returned earlier this month, alleges Leshinsky distributed the synthetic opioid to a man in July 2017 who later died after ingesting it. The case lands amid a national surge in fentanyl-related deaths, where traffickers face escalating penalties under federal law.
While the charge is severe, federal officials stress that an indictment is not a conviction. Leshinsky is presumed innocent until evidence is presented to a jury that proves guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Still, the charge reflects the Justice Department’s aggressive stance on opioid traffickers linked to fatal overdoses.
The investigation was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, which has prioritized dismantling supply chains responsible for flooding communities with lethal doses of fentanyl. The prosecution is being handled by Stefani Hepford, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona.
Case number CR-18-00229-RCC-JR marks another strike in the federal crackdown on Arizona’s opioid networks. The U.S. Attorney’s Office continues to pursue cases where traffickers profit while leaving bodies in their wake.
