Tucson Woman Sentenced to 60 Months for Trafficking 453,000 Fentanyl Pills

A 30-year-old Tucson woman, Alegria Pompeya Mendoza-Castro, has been sentenced to 60 months in prison for her role in trafficking approximately 453,000 fentanyl-laced pills and one kilogram of fentanyl powder.

Mendoza-Castro, who pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Distribute Fentanyl and Possession with Intent to Distribute Fentanyl on November 16, 2023, was sentenced on Tuesday by United States District Judge John C. Hinderaker.

The fentanyl-laced pills and powder were discovered in the spare tire of Mendoza-Castro’s vehicle during an inspection at the DeConcini Port of Entry in Nogales, Arizona, on April 20, 2023.

This case is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) Strike Force operation, which uses a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach to identify, disrupt, and dismantle the highest-level criminal organizations threatening the United States.

The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Assistant United States Attorney David Petermann handled the prosecution.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, has announced the sentencing of Mendoza-Castro, citing the severity of the crimes and the need to hold individuals accountable for their actions.

Mendoza-Castro’s sentencing is a significant blow to the organized crime networks involved in fentanyl trafficking, and it highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat the scourge of fentanyl in Arizona.
