A 27-year-old man from Turlock, California, has been charged with the unthinkable. Christian Ceja, 27, of Turlock, was indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts of sex crimes against a minor. Ceja is accused of transporting a minor victim from the Eastern District of California to Idaho with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.
The indictment, announced by U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert, also alleges that Ceja received images of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct. The investigation into Ceja’s activities began in August 2023 and continued until January 2024, with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department and Homeland Security Investigations working together to bring Ceja to justice.
The case against Ceja is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute those who exploit children via the internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
Ceja faces a mandatory statutory minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum of life in prison for the most serious charged count. He also faces a $250,000 fine per count, plus up to a lifetime of supervised release. Any sentence, however, would be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
The charges against Ceja are only allegations, and he is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Assistant U.S. Attorney Shea J. Kenny is prosecuting the case. Ceja’s indictment serves as a stark reminder of the horrors that can occur when predators like him are allowed to roam free.
Project Safe Childhood is a vital initiative that has made a significant impact in the fight against child exploitation. However, there is still much work to be done. We urge anyone with information about child sex crimes to come forward and report it to the authorities. Together, we can make our communities safer for everyone, especially our children.
