TULSA, Okla. – In a major win for justice, a federal jury convicted 50-year-old Garrin Michael Thompson of Catoosa, Oklahoma, of heinous child sex crimes.
Thompson was found guilty of Transportation of a Minor with Intent to Engage in Criminal Sexual Activity; Aggravated Sexual Abuse of a Minor Under 12 in Indian Country; and Coercion and Enticement of a Minor. The jury delivered their verdict in September 2022.
U.S. District Judge John F. Heil, III, handed down a life sentence to Thompson, who will be supervised for life upon release and required to register as a sex offender.
Thompson’s crimes were shocking in their brutality. Prosecutors revealed during the trial that he had been abusing and coercing his victims since at least 2000 or 2001. He even went so far as to install video cameras in his home and a vacation rental to record the minors in his care.
Four victims, including a tribal member, bravely testified against Thompson at trial, detailing the molestation, abuse, coercion, and enticement they suffered at his hands. Investigators also discovered indicators on Thompson’s computer that suggested he may have been viewing child pornography or incestuous content.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Cheryl L. Baber prosecuted the case, while the FBI and Catoosa Police Department conducted the investigation. The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood (PSC), a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
U.S. Attorney Clinton Johnson praised the verdict, stating, ‘One of the five essential components to Project Safe Childhood is accountability. Thompson knew his victims and exploited their trust. Life imprisonment ensures that Thompson is held accountable for his actions.’
Thompson will remain in custody pending transfer to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of holding child predators accountable and the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies to bring them to justice.
