Garrin Michael Thompson, Transportation of a Minor with Intent to Engage in Criminal Sexual Activity, Oklahoma 2022

TULSA, Okla. – Garrin Michael Thompson, 50, of Catoosa, will spend the rest of his life behind bars. U.S. District Judge John F. Heil, III, delivered the sentence today after a federal jury convicted Thompson in September 2022 of sickening crimes against children. The charges: Transportation of a Minor with Intent to Engage in Criminal Sexual Activity; Aggravated Sexual Abuse of a Minor Under 12 in Indian Country; and Coercion and Enticement of a Minor. This wasn’t a fleeting lapse in judgment; this was a calculated, years-long pattern of predation.

Judge Heil didn’t mince words, ordering Thompson to serve life in prison. Even if he were ever released – a scenario many will fight to prevent – he would face lifetime supervision and mandatory registration as a sex offender. The sentence reflects the gravity of his offenses and the devastating impact on his victims.

“One of the five essential components to Project Safe Childhood is accountability,” stated U.S. Attorney Clinton Johnson, a statement that rings hollow for too long for those harmed. “Thompson knew his victims and exploited their trust. Life imprisonment ensures that Thompson is held accountable for his actions.” But accountability doesn’t undo the trauma. It doesn’t erase the stolen innocence.

The courtroom heard harrowing testimony from four victims, now adults, who bravely recounted the molestation, abuse, coercion, and enticement they endured as children under Thompson’s twisted care. Prosecutors laid bare a disturbing history, demonstrating that Thompson’s predatory behavior stretched back to 2000 or 2001. He wasn’t content with direct abuse; Thompson installed video cameras – one in his home, another in a vacation rental – to record his victims, a chilling display of control and depravity. Evidence also revealed attempts to assault and molest a victim, and investigators discovered digital footprints suggesting Thompson’s viewing of child pornography and incestuous material.

The fact that one of the victims is a member of a tribal community adds another layer of betrayal to this case. Thompson’s actions violated not only federal law but also the trust placed in him within that community. He is now in custody awaiting transfer to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, where he belongs.

The investigation was a joint effort by the FBI and the Catoosa Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cheryl L. Baber prosecuted the case. This case was brought under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood (PSC), a national initiative launched in 2006 to combat the horrific epidemic of child sexual exploitation. PSC brings together federal, state, and local resources to find, arrest, and prosecute predators and rescue victims. Information about PSC and internet safety resources can be found on the Department of Justice website. But the real work – protecting our children – falls on all of us.
