Two Indicted for Making False Statements in SD
Two individuals have been sentenced for making false statements to a federal agent in a case investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Lynn Barbara Van Laar, a 65-year-old woman from Worthing, South Dakota, and Randall Jay Jurgens, a 54-year-old man from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, were both found guilty of making a false statement.
According to court documents, Van Laar and Jurgens made false statements to a federal agent during an investigation into a federal crime.
US Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Van Laar was sentenced to time served and fined $250, while Jurgens was sentenced to one year of probation.
The two defendants were indicted by a federal grand jury on June 4, 2013, and subsequently pled guilty to the charges. Van Laar entered a guilty plea on September 9, 2013, while Jurgens entered a guilty plea on September 10, 2013.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Randy J. Seiler and John E. Haak, who worked closely with the FBI to build a strong case against the defendants.
The sentencing marks the end of a lengthy investigation and prosecution, and serves as a reminder of the importance of honesty and integrity in all dealings with law enforcement.
