Two Men Hit with Life Sentence Charge Over 60 Pounds of Meth

Edgar Marin-Melendrez, 29, a citizen of Mexico, and Misael Elias, 22, from Bell, California, were arraigned in federal court yesterday for their alleged involvement in a massive methamphetamine trafficking scheme. According to U.S. Attorney Nicholas A. Trutanich of the District of Nevada and DEA Assistant Special Agent in Charge Daniel Neill, both men face life sentences after being accused of possessing with intent to distribute over 60 pounds of meth.

The charges stem from an August 14 incident in North Las Vegas, where Marin-Melendrez and Elias met a buyer. Law enforcement officers caught the duo as they attempted to sell the drugs, discovering a suitcase filled with approximately 62 pounds of methamphetamine in their vehicle’s trunk.

In addition to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, each defendant could be fined $10 million under federal statutes. The case is now set for a preliminary hearing on September 1, 2020, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Cam Ferenbach.

It’s important to note that a criminal complaint is merely an accusation and does not constitute evidence of guilt. Both Marin-Melendrez and Elias are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The DEA led the investigation into this drug trafficking ring, which has shocked the Nevada community. The gravity of the charges underscores the government’s commitment to combating methamphetamine distribution across the state.
