TX Man Jody Bass Charged in Postal Carjacking

BEAUMONT, Texas – Jefferson County native Jody Lee Bass, 34, is facing federal charges for a brazen postal carjacking in Beaumont. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas announced today that Bass has been charged with carjacking and assault on a federal officer.

According to court documents, Bass approached a mail carrier from the U.S. Postal Service on Avenue F in Beaumont on June 8, 2024. The suspect is accused of wielding a knife to rob the mail truck and attempting to stab the victim. Despite the mail carrier’s bravery, he managed to escape, allowing Bass to flee with the vehicle.

Bass appeared in federal court on June 12, 2024, where he was formally charged. If convicted on both counts, the defendant could be sentenced to up to 35 years in federal prison.

This case is part of an ongoing effort by the Eastern District of Texas’ Carjacking Task Force to combat carjacking crimes. The investigation into this incident has been a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the Beaumont Police Department.

The Assistant U.S. Attorney handling the case is John B. Ross. It’s important to note that while a complaint or indictment may be filed, it does not constitute evidence of guilt. Bass is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

This incident serves as yet another stark reminder of the dangers faced by postal workers and the need for continued vigilance in the fight against violent crime.
