A Saucier man has been sentenced to over six years in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm.
On November 18, 2017, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office arrested Tyler Bachtel, 23, after he refused to yield to a deputy who initiated a traffic stop. During the pursuit, Bachtel threw a shotgun out of the window.
Bachtel, who had been previously convicted of felony possession of a controlled substance in Harrison County Circuit Court, jumped out of the vehicle while it was still moving and was arrested while attempting to flee.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case with assistance from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Nobile.
U.S. District Judge Louis Guirola sentenced Bachtel to 78 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release for possession of a firearm by a felon. The court also ordered Bachtel to pay a $5,000 fine.
Bachtel’s sentence is a result of his refusal to comply with law enforcement and his decision to flee from the scene while attempting to discard a firearm.
The case serves as a reminder of the consequences of possessing a firearm as a felon and the importance of complying with law enforcement.
