Houston Man Jailed for Insider Trading Scheme
A 42-year-old Houstonian has been sentenced to prison for insider trading, making $1.7M in illicit profits. Tyler Loudon pleaded guilty to securities fraud on February 22.
U.S. District Judge Sim Lake handed down a 24-month prison sentence, followed by one year of supervised release. The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offense and the need for adequate deterrence.
Insider trading is a serious offense that affects the integrity of the financial markets and erodes public trust. According to U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani, Loudon’s crime was particularly egregious due to his wife’s role as an insider who provided him with confidential information.
Loudon’s wife was an associate manager in mergers and acquisitions at an international oil and gas company. Unbeknownst to her, Loudon used this information to purchase 46,450 shares ahead of the public announcement, resulting in a substantial profit.
Before sentencing, Loudon forfeited the $1.7M in illegal proceeds to the United States. He will self-surrender to a Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.
The FBI conducted the investigation with the assistance of the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen M. Lansden prosecuted the case.
Special Agent in Charge Douglas Williams of the FBI Houston field office stated, “Insider trading cases like this one cause damage to everyday investors, our economy, and the public’s trust in the fairness of our financial markets.”
