Raymond Kyle Welsh, a 33-year-old resident of Tyler, Texas, has been hit with serious charges after pleading guilty to stealing government property. According to the Department of Justice, Welsh stands accused of swindling over $26,588 in Social Security Supplemental Income (SSI) payments and $213,981.19 in Medicaid benefits from federal programs.
The 33-year-old’s fraud scheme spanned nearly eight years, from January 2003 to September 2010, during which he concealed his financial resources and income to qualify for the benefits. Welsh admitted that he knew full well he was not entitled to these funds, which he acknowledged belonged to the United States government.
Welsh is now staring down the barrel of a potential 10-year federal prison sentence, plus mandatory restitution of $240,569.19 and the forfeiture of his ill-gotten gains. Sentencing has been scheduled for a later date.
This case has been a joint effort between the Social Security Administration and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Ann Cozby leading the prosecution against Welsh.
Welsh now joins the ranks of those who have fallen victim to financial fraud schemes, serving as a stark reminder of the dangers of misrepresenting one’s financial situation to secure federal benefits.
