MUSKOGEE, OK – A Stilwell man is headed to federal prison for a decade after a February 2022 traffic stop turned up a stash of methamphetamine and an illegal handgun. Tyre Lowery Ford, 34, was sentenced Monday to a total of 120 months – 60 months for Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine and another 60 consecutive months for Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime.
The case began when Stilwell police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle. Ford, behind the wheel, attempted to flee, making suspicious movements that alerted officers to potential concealed contraband. A search of the vehicle revealed a 9mm handgun on the driver’s seat and approximately 100 grams of methamphetamine. That’s nearly a quarter of a pound of the highly addictive and dangerous drug.
Federal prosecutors say Ford pleaded guilty in November 2022. Court documents detail how Ford’s actions directly linked him to the illegal drugs and the firearm. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) joined the Stilwell Police Department in the investigation, solidifying the federal charges.
U.S. District Judge John F. Heil, III, handed down the sentence in Muskogee, stating Ford will serve a non-parolable sentence, meaning he will not be eligible for early release. He was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal to begin his journey to a designated Bureau of Prisons facility.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Gross led the prosecution, demonstrating the federal government’s commitment to tackling drug trafficking and associated violent crime in Eastern Oklahoma. The ATF’s Dallas Field Division assisted in the investigation, highlighting the agency’s regional reach.
This case serves as a stark reminder that possessing drugs with intent to distribute, coupled with illegal firearm possession, carries severe consequences under federal law. Ford’s actions have not only landed him in prison for a decade but also contribute to the broader fight against the opioid crisis and gun violence plaguing communities across the country.
