CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A convicted felon has been sentenced to 78 months in prison for illegally possessing a firearm. According to court documents, Tyree Lashawn May, 31, of Charlotte, was convicted of robbery in 2015 and is prohibited from possessing firearms. On October 6, 2022, May was found to be in possession of a 9mm firearm in a stolen vehicle. May, who was using the alias ‘Scooter,’ falsely claimed his name was Jerome Drummond and he was from Virginia.
May pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. U.S. District Judge Frank D. Whitney presided over the hearing. The case is being prosecuted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a collaboration between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence.
May’s prison sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) investigated the case.
The investigation began when two individuals reported to law enforcement that someone they knew as ‘Scooter’ had stolen their vehicle. During the investigation, law enforcement determined that Scooter was May. The next day, officers found the stolen vehicle and observed May carry a black bag to the car and place it in the trunk. The officers stopped May who falsely claimed his name was Jerome Drummond and he was from Virginia. Law enforcement conducted a search of the vehicle and found a 9mm firearm in the bag May had put in the trunk.
Project Safe Neighborhoods is a federal initiative that aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence by working with local law enforcement agencies to target violent offenders. The program is led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office and includes partners from federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
May’s case is a reminder of the dangers of gun violence and the importance of holding those who break the law accountable. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to keep our communities safe.
The case against May is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Sielaff. The ATF and CMPD investigated the case.
