Tyrik Brown Pleads Guilty to Possession of Contraband in Prison
SCRANTON – In a shocking turn of events, 29-year-old Tyrik Brown, an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution, Schuylkill, in Minersville, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty on January 24, 2024, to the charge of possession of contraband in prison.
According to United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam, Brown, formerly of Washington D.C., admitted to possessing a dangerous prison-made weapon, commonly known as a “shank.” The charge stems from an incident in April 2023 in which staff at FCI Schuylkill found Brown in possession of the weapon.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Prisons Special Investigative Service. Assistant United States Attorney Robert J. O’Hara is prosecuting the case.
As a result of his guilty plea, Brown faces a maximum penalty of five years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.
Brown’s guilty plea comes as a warning to other inmates who may be considering bringing contraband into the prison. “We take incidents like this very seriously and will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of our facilities,” said a spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Brown’s sentencing is pending and will be determined by Judge Robert D. Mariani after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
