NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – On February 5, 2020, a brazen ATM robbery attempt shook the streets of New Orleans, leaving residents on high alert. The plot thickened when authorities apprehended Tyrik Scott, a 20-year-old from Chalmette, who has since pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank larceny.
According to court records, Scott and his accomplices attempted to break into an ATM located in the drive-through of a Capital One Bank using sledgehammers, crowbars, chains, and a truck. This was not their first rodeo, as they were observed in the same truck attempting to break into an ATM at Hancock Whitney Bank just prior to the Capital One heist.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney G. Dall Kammer, Chief of the General Crimes Unit, handled the prosecution of this case.
Scott now faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 5 years, a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment. Sentencing is scheduled for September 8, 2021, before the Honorable Susie Morgan.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of community vigilance and the efforts of law enforcement agencies in keeping our streets safe. As we continue to navigate the complexities of crime and punishment, it is essential to acknowledge the dedication of those who work tirelessly to bring perpetrators to justice.
As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether additional individuals will be charged in connection with the attempted robbery. One thing is certain, however: the people of New Orleans can rest a little easier knowing that Tyrik Scott will face the consequences of his actions.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department in investigating this matter. The case highlights the need for continued cooperation between law enforcement agencies to combat the scourge of crime in our communities.
