A Las Vegas felon with a long criminal record is headed to federal prison for nearly 22 years after being caught with a loaded automatic pistol, nearly 10 grams of cocaine, and drug packaging tools during a robbery investigation. Tyrone Davis, 33, was sentenced Tuesday to 260 months in prison by U.S. District Judge James C. Mahan.
Davis pleaded guilty to three counts: possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. The charges stemmed from a July 19, 2012 search of his Las Vegas apartment executed by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department detectives.
During the raid, officers recovered a Browning .22 caliber automatic pistol, ammunition, a bullet-proof vest, a pistol magazine, 9.6 grams of cocaine, and two digital scales coated with drug residue. Small plastic bags, commonly used to portion narcotics for sale, were also seized—clear evidence, prosecutors said, of intent to distribute.
Davis, a recidivist with prior felony convictions in both Henderson and Las Vegas, admitted to owning the firearm and drugs. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) led the federal investigation, underscoring the severity of an armed felon operating in the community.
“The defendant is a recidivist, a convicted felon who unlawfully possessed an automatic pistol, ammunition, over 9.5 grams of cocaine, and drug paraphernalia,” said U.S. Attorney Daniel G. Bogden of the District of Nevada. “Along with our law enforcement partners, the U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to fighting violent crime and keeping Nevada’s communities and streets safe.”
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lisa C. Cartier-Giroux and Phillip N. Smith, Jr. Davis will serve six years of supervised release following his prison term—a tight leash, given his criminal history and the violent potential of his offenses.
