Tyrone Dilling, Mail Theft, Louisiana 2022

A former postal employee has been brought to justice for his role in the theft of mail in New Orleans.

Tyrone Dilling, 27, pleaded guilty on March 17, 2022, to unlawfully opening the mail before the Honorable Barry W. Ashe, District Court Judge, Eastern District of Louisiana.

According to documents filed in federal court, Dilling was employed by the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier in New Orleans when he was apprehended opening and tampering with the content of mail items he was entrusted to handle for the Postal Service.

The maximum penalty for the offense is five years imprisonment and/or a fine of $250,000 or the greater of twice the gross gain to the defendant or twice the gross loss to the victim followed by up to three years of supervised release, and a mandatory special assessment of one hundred dollars.

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the United States Postal Service, Office of the Inspector General in investigating this matter.

Assistant United States Attorney Richard R. Pickens, II is in charge of the prosecution.

Tyrone Dilling’s guilty plea follows a thorough investigation by the United States Postal Service, Office of the Inspector General, into the unlawful opening of mail by a postal employee.
