Tyrone Johnson, 43, of Washington, D.C., has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting a stranger on August 30, 2022, in Starburst Plaza, located at the intersection of Benning Road NE and Bladensburg Road NE.
According to the government’s evidence, Johnson entered the plaza at around 5:40 a.m. and asked the victim if he could buy a cigarette from him. The victim did not have any cigarettes and told Johnson ‘no.’
Johnson then told the victim to, ‘Give it up,’ before taking out a handgun. Johnson then fired multiple times at the victim at close range, hitting him in his midsection. Johnson then ran into a nearby apartment complex.
Police later identified Johnson through review of video surveillance, GPS records, and ballistics evidence that linked Johnson to this shooting and one committed one week before this offense.
Johnson was found guilty at trial in June 2024 of aggravated assault while armed, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault with significant bodily injury while armed, three counts of possession of a firearm during each of those crimes of violence, unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a license, possession of an unregistered firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition.
Superior Court Judge Marisa Demeo also ordered Johnson to serve five years of supervised release.
U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela A. Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department commended the work of those who investigated the case from the Metropolitan Police Department and those who helped on the case from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
