Defendant Gets Life for Brutal Murder of Ex-Girlfriend

A 51-year-old Maryland man has been found guilty of first-degree murder while armed in the 2016 slaying of his ex-girlfriend in Washington DC.

Donald R. Hairston, of District Heights, Md., was convicted by a jury in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. He faces a sentence of life in prison and will be sentenced on July 20, 2018, by the Honorable Danya A. Dayson.

According to the government’s evidence, Hairston had a history of domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend, Stephanie Goodloe. She had filed for a temporary protection order against him just two weeks before her murder, after he had slashed her tires and shown up at her house pounding on the door at all hours of the night.

On the night of the murder, Hairston’s 11-year-old daughter with Goodloe was home when she heard the sound of gunfire coming from her mother’s room. She waited a few minutes before checking on her mother, and when she did, she found Goodloe dead with multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the head.

The girl then called 911, and Hairston was arrested the same day. He has been in custody ever since.

U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu commended the work of those who investigated the case from the Metropolitan Police Department, as well as the District of Columbia Department of Forensic Sciences and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. She also acknowledged the efforts of Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alicia Long and John Timmer, who investigated, indicted, and prosecuted the case.

Hairston was found guilty of first-degree murder while armed, first-degree felony murder while armed, first-degree burglary while armed, temporary protection order violation, stalking, and related firearms offenses.
