Rapid City Man Sentenced to 15 Years for Voluntary Manslaughter

Rapid City, SD – In a shocking turn of events, Tyson White Plume, a 29-year-old man from Manderson, South Dakota, has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for his role in the shooting death of his 17-year-old girlfriend.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, White Plume pleaded guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter and was sentenced by Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange on August 2, 2024. In addition to the prison time, White Plume was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The conviction arose out of the shooting death of White Plume’s girlfriend, which occurred on February 5, 2022, at Stone’s residence near Rockyford, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

White Plume admitted to pointing a pistol at the minor’s face and pulling the trigger, despite not ensuring the firearm did not have a bullet in the chamber. His girlfriend was just 17 years old at the time of her death.

White Plume’s co-defendant, Sarah Stone, 44, of Rapid City, was sentenced to time served, followed by one year of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The case was investigated by the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety and the FBI, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Heather Knox prosecuting the case.

White Plume was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
