U.S. District Judge Charlene E. Honeywell has sentenced former University of Tampa music professor Nathan A. Madsen, 37, to 17 years and 6 months in federal prison for enticing a child to produce child pornography and possessing the same.
Madsen, who pleaded guilty on February 3, 2017, also faces a life term of supervised release. The court ordered him to forfeit his vehicle and multiple electronic storage devices used in the offense. Before his arrest, Madsen worked at the University of Tampa as a music professor.
Court documents reveal Madsen responded to an online advertisement for prostitution services on Backpage.com, where he attempted to arrange sex with a 14-year-old girl. The ad was a sting operation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). After paying an undercover agent $140, Madsen met the minor at the agreed-upon location.
Upon arrest, agents searched Madsen’s apartment and found several electronic devices. Forensic analysis of these devices revealed online conversations with a 16-year-old girl from May 2015 to July 2015, during which he coerced her into producing explicit images and videos for his personal use. At the time of his arrest, Madsen possessed 61 explicit images and 14 videos of the child, some depicting violent or sadistic content.
Ivan J. Arvelo, acting special agent in charge of HSI Tampa, emphasized that this investigation showcases the ongoing threat of child exploitation. ‘Today’s sentencing sends a clear message: HSI is committed to investigating and prosecuting those who commit heinous crimes against our children,’ Arvelo said.
This case was investigated by HSI and the Tampa Police Department, prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Stacie B. Harris and Lisa M. Thelwell, and brought under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. More information is available at www.justice.gov/psc.
