Violent Crime on the Rise in Louisville KY as U.S. Attorney Announces PSN Grant Funding
Louisville, KY – A surge in violent crime has gripped the city of Louisville, with local authorities struggling to keep pace with the growing problem. In response, U.S. Attorney Michael A. Bennett has announced the availability of $489,571 in funding to support Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiatives aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in the Western District of Kentucky.
The PSN program is the federal government’s flagship initiative to combat violent crime, and it has been instrumental in reducing violence in communities across the country. At the heart of the program is a commitment to fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that prevent violence, and setting strategic enforcement priorities.
According to U.S. Attorney Bennett, the key to success lies in bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to create safer neighborhoods. ‘PSN’s core principles bring together law enforcement and the community to decrease violent crime,’ said Bennett. ‘I encourage community organizations and law enforcement agencies throughout our 53 counties to apply for funding and utilize their expertise to make our communities safer for all citizens.’
The PSN program has $489,571 to award in the Western District, with grant activities managed through the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet’s electronic grants management system, Intelligrants 10.0 (IGX). Applications must be submitted by Friday, February 24, 2023, at 6:00 pm ET, with technical assistance available from the JPSC upon request.
The Western District of Kentucky’s PSN Team will prioritize grant awards to youth-serving organizations that provide prevention programming, mental health and social services assistance for at-risk individuals, crime prevention training, de-escalation training, and community training for law enforcement officers. Gang task forces and equipment, services, and technology for law enforcement will also be given priority.
