U.S. Attorney Daniel P. Bubar, National Police Week Recognition, Virginia 2021

In a solemn tribute to the nation’s law enforcement community, U.S. Attorney Daniel P. Bubar recognized National Police Week in Roanoke, Virginia.

The week-long celebration, observed from May 9 to 15, 2021, serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifices made by federal, state, local, and Tribal law enforcement officers.

In a statement, Attorney General Garland expressed his deepest gratitude to the nation’s law enforcement officers, saying, ‘This week is a time to honor our law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.’ He added, ‘I am constantly inspired by the extraordinary courage and dedication with which members of law enforcement act each day, putting their lives on the line to make our communities safer.’

Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel Bubar echoed the sentiments, praising the unwavering dedication of law enforcement officers who risk their lives to protect the safety of communities. ‘Every day our police officers put on their badges and risk their lives to protect the safety of our communities,’ he said.

The celebration also marks the 59th anniversary of President Kennedy’s proclamation establishing Peace Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week. The observance honors law enforcement officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty, with May 15 being dedicated to Peace Officers Memorial Day.

During National Police Week, the nation comes together to recognize the contributions of law enforcement from around the country. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the courage and devotion of law enforcement officers who continue to serve their communities with unwavering commitment. This year’s celebration will be marked by a Virtual Candlelight Vigil on May 13, 2021, where the names of 394 fallen officers will be read. The event will be livestreamed to the public at 8:00 PM EDT.

A Roll Call of Heroes ceremony, coordinated by the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), will also honor over 300 officers. The FOP’s Roll Call of Heroes can be viewed at www.fop.net. To learn more about National Police Week events, visit www.policeweek.org.
