BUFFALO, N.Y. – A 23-year-old student at the University of Buffalo (UB) faced justice today as he was sentenced for his role in a Xanax importation scheme that spanned across the border from Canada. Adam Brzozowski, along with co-defendants Zhe Wang and Kevin Szura, were involved in a conspiracy to import alprazolam, better known as Xanax.
Brzozowski, a resident of Queens, NY, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara to time served – approximately six months – plus one year of supervised release. Assistant U.S. Attorney Wei Xiang revealed that the trio imported shipments of pills, or ‘bars’, containing alprazolam from Canada to Amherst, NY.
In a dramatic interception in March 2016, law enforcement agents halted two packages addressed to Brzozowski, each containing nearly 3,000 Xanax bars. Wang and Szura had procured the drugs on dark net marketplaces using bitcoins as payment. The conspirators’ estimated illegal importation of over 80,000 Xanax bars was almost entirely for local distribution.
Wang, who was also a UB student, received a sentence of 24 months in prison following his conviction. Szura has been convicted and is currently awaiting sentencing.
The investigation leading to the convictions was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations, directed by Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Kevin Kelly, along with the United States Postal Inspection Service, led by Inspector-in-Charge Shelly Binkowski.
Today’s sentence marks the conclusion of a high-profile investigation into the illegal drug trade, serving as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by dark net marketplaces and the relentless efforts of law enforcement to combat such activities.
