Hermosa Man Sentenced for Identity Theft and Fraud
A 40-year-old man from Hermosa, South Dakota, has been sentenced to prison for committing a string of financial crimes. Tobin Nettifee was found guilty of Access Device Fraud and Aggravated Identity Theft.
On October 2, 2018, Nettifee was sentenced to 3 years and 9 months in federal prison, to be followed by 3 years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and $19,159.57 in restitution. The total restitution is a significant amount, reflecting the extent of Nettifee’s crimes.
The charges against Nettifee were related to his use of another person’s identity to obtain three credit cards. He then used those credit cards for various purchases, totaling more than $19,000. In addition to the credit card purchases, Nettifee also stole a gift card from a mailbox and used that card to make a purchase.
The investigation into Nettifee’s crimes was conducted by the United States Postal Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson prosecuted the case, ensuring that justice was served.
Nettifee was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, marking the end of his freedom. The sentencing of Nettifee serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of committing financial crimes.
