Michael Johnson, Child Sex Assault, D.C. 2023

WASHINGTON D.C. – A 45-year-old District man is headed to prison for a sickening betrayal of trust. He was sentenced today to 30 months behind bars for sexually assaulting two nieces and his stepdaughter, a crime that ripped apart a family and exposed a dark underbelly of abuse.

U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips announced the sentence, the culmination of a case that began with a mother’s agonizing discovery. The man, whose name is being withheld by authorities to protect the victims, pled guilty in February 2017 to one count of second-degree child sexual abuse and two counts of misdemeanor sexual abuse of a child in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. The plea deal, contingent on court approval, stipulated the 30-month prison term, which was accepted today by The Honorable Hiram E. Puig-Lugo.

The depravity unfolded between December 1 and December 22, 2016. The man admitted to sexually fondling his two nieces, ages eight and nine, during a single visit to their Northwest Washington home. The girls, thankfully, confided in their mother – the man’s own sister – who immediately contacted the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). That initial report cracked the case wide open.

A thorough investigation by MPD’s Sexual Assault Unit revealed a pattern of abuse. Detectives learned the man had been sexually fondling his 15-year-old stepdaughter on multiple occasions throughout 2016. He confessed to these acts early in the court proceedings, seemingly attempting a meager attempt at mitigating the damage he’d already caused. It wasn’t enough to save him from justice.

This wasn’t just about securing a conviction; it was about providing some measure of closure for victims scarred by this man’s actions. Following his prison sentence, the man will be subject to three years of supervised release and, crucially, will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life – a permanent mark of his monstrous behavior.

U.S. Attorney Phillips rightly praised the dedication of the MPD’s Sexual Assault Unit, as well as the sensitive work of Safe Shores personnel who conducted forensic interviews with the three young victims. He also acknowledged the efforts of Paralegal Specialist Brenda C. Williams, Victim/Witness Advocate Elsa Maltese, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Peter V. Taylor and Caroline Burrell, who skillfully investigated and prosecuted the case. This case serves as a grim reminder of the predators lurking within our communities and the vital importance of reporting abuse.
