PORTLAND, Maine — The grimy details of a local union president’s downfall hit the courts today as Kyle Chasse, 38, copped to wire fraud and making false written statements. This former leader of a chapter representing Portsmouth Naval Shipyard workers has admitted to siphoning off over $10,000 in union funds between 2020 and 2022.
Chasse, the mastermind behind this financial heist, is accused of making unauthorized cash withdrawals and debit purchases from the union’s bank account. The list of his questionable expenditures reads like a bar tab: purchases from bars, restaurants, vending machines, and more — all without so much as a by-your-leave from the union.
But Chasse didn’t stop there. He also falsified financial documents to shroud his misdeeds. One such document was a federal financial disclosure form where he lied about the amount of money received from the union, a clear attempt to cover up his embezzlement.
The U.S. District Court in Portland is now awaiting the completion of a presentence investigative report by the U.S. Probation Office before meting out justice. If convicted, Chasse faces a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment, a fine not exceeding $250,000, and three years of supervised release.
This investigation was a joint effort by the Office of Labor-Management Standards of the U.S. Department of Labor, underscoring the gravity of the crime and the robust pursuit of justice.
