It was a day of high drama on March 2, 1910, as Detectives from the Washington D.C. police department descended upon the residence of Mrs. Uornsby in search of a prized collection of jewels and valuables. The victim claimed that the stolen items were last seen before a lavish dinner party the previous evening, but the investigation failed to yield any leads.
The police were stumped, but one thing was clear – the thief had struck with precision, making off with a string of irreplaceable treasures. Among the stolen articles were a pair of diamond and pearl chain pendants, each adorned with a large diamond valued at between $5,000 and $10,600, a gold comb set with diamonds worth $1,500, and a gold watch set with diamonds valued at $1,500.
Also on the list of stolen items were two black enamel bracelets, two gold carved bracelets, and a diamond necklace set with atones of graduated sizes valued at $2,500. The total value of the stolen items was estimated to be in excess of $10,000, a staggering sum in the early 20th century.
Detective Weedon was tasked with leading the investigation, but despite a thorough search of the house and surrounding areas, no clues were found. Inspector Boardman was also on the scene, but the case remained a mystery.
The police were tight-lipped about the investigation, but sources close to the case hinted that the thief may have been an insider, someone with intimate knowledge of the household and its valuables.
As the investigation continued, the public was left to speculate about the identity of the thief and the motives behind the daring heist. One thing was certain, however – the people of Washington D.C. were on high alert, and the police were working tirelessly to bring the perpetrator to justice.
