SALT LAKE CITY, UT – A massive haul of fentanyl – roughly 100,000 individual pills – has landed two Utah men in federal hot water. Elvin Isaac Vega Zuniga, 19, and Andrew Estefan Valle Acosta, 19, both of West Valley City, are facing serious federal drug charges following a raid earlier this month.
The bust, the result of a months-long investigation by the FBI and the Davis Metro Narcotics Strike Force, stemmed from a probe into a drug trafficking operation. Agents reportedly conducted a controlled purchase, pinpointing a West Valley City residence as a key distribution point. A subsequent search warrant, executed on September 2, 2025, yielded the staggering quantity of pills that field-tested positive for the deadly opioid.
Adding another layer to the case, Elvin Isaac Vega Zuniga is confirmed to be in the United States illegally. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) encountered him in 2023, issuing a “notice to appear” for his immigration case. Despite knowing he faced potential removal proceedings, Vega Zuniga allegedly continued to engage in the trafficking of fentanyl, brazenly disregarding the law.
Both Vega Zuniga and Valle Acosta are now charged with possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute. This isn’t just about pills; it’s about fueling a deadly epidemic and lining the pockets of those who profit from misery. The potential consequences for this level of trafficking are significant, and a conviction could carry a hefty prison sentence.
The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Peter Reichman, and falls under the umbrella of “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide initiative aimed at dismantling drug cartels and transnational criminal organizations. The Department of Justice is throwing its full weight behind this operation, streamlining resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN).
The defendants are scheduled to make their initial appearance on the indictment on September 19, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. in courtroom 8.4 of the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse. It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is merely an accusation, and both men are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Acting United States Attorney Felice John Viti announced the charges. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it unfolds.
