Utah Man Convicted of Tax Fraud
A Salt Lake City jury yesterday convicted Louis Hansen, a chiropractor and health-care products business owner, of attempting to evade the payment of his federal income taxes and corruptly endeavoring to impair the administration of the internal revenue laws.
According to evidence presented at trial and other court documents, Hansen, of Orem, Utah, made two attempts to fraudulently pay his tax debt to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in 2012. The first attempt involved a check for $342,699.41 drawn on a closed bank account in March 2012. The second attempt involved 10 additional checks for $425,000 each, drawn on a different closed bank account, and sent to at least six different IRS offices in June 2012.
U.S. District Judge Howard C. Nielsen Jr. scheduled Hansen’s sentencing for November 4. The convicted tax evader faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison for tax evasion and three years in prison for corruptly impeding the internal revenue laws.
Acting U.S. Attorney Andrea T. Martinez for the District of Utah and Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart M. Goldberg of the Justice Department’s Tax Division made the announcement. The case was investigated by the IRS – Criminal Investigation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin L. Sundwall and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Kameros are prosecuting the case. Hansen’s conviction is a significant blow to those who attempt to cheat the system and evade their tax responsibilities.
