CONCORD, N.H. – John Shelley, 34, of Highland, Utah, will spend the next 30 months in federal prison after being sentenced for possessing child pornography. The sentence, handed down by Acting United States Attorney John J. Farley, marks the culmination of a case dating back nearly a decade.
The feds first caught wind of Shelley’s depravity back in October 2014. Department of Homeland Security agents, armed with a search warrant, raided Shelley’s home and vehicle, seizing two computers. A deep dive into the seized hardware revealed a sickening trove of illicit images – proof Shelley wasn’t just browsing, but hoarding child pornography.
Investigators with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children meticulously analyzed the files. The results were chilling: 61 images and one video depicting known minor children engaged in sexually explicit acts. Shelley had knowingly possessed this material, turning his devices into a digital vault of abuse. He previously entered a guilty plea, acknowledging his crimes.
This case is a grim reminder of the ongoing battle against online exploitation. The Department of Justice launched Project Safe Childhood in 2006, a nationwide initiative dedicated to protecting children from predators lurking in the digital shadows. The project brings together federal, state, and local law enforcement to track down and prosecute those who prey on the vulnerable.
The investigation was a collaborative effort. Homeland Security Investigations spearheaded the probe, with crucial support from the New Hampshire and Vermont Internet Crimes Against Children Task Forces, and the Litchfield Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Helen Fitzgibbon skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring Shelley faced justice for his heinous actions. Following his prison term, Shelley will be subject to ten years of supervised release.
While a conviction and sentence offer a measure of accountability, the scars of this crime run deep. Project Safe Childhood provides resources for reporting online exploitation and protecting children. Those seeking more information can visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov. The Grimy Times will continue to follow federal prosecutions of those who exploit children.
